We shouldn’t be affording companies the ability to profit off other people’s creations without their consent, and despite the intentions, that's basically how current copyright law works.
I totally agree. Another aspect that could be relevant: If I, as a human, memorize copyrighted works and then reproduce them, I am still violating copyrights.
GPT, for example, is doing exactly that. Ask it, for example, for the lyrics to a specific song, and it will perfectly reproduce it. Same with pages of books. It has tons of copyrighted works in it's storage and it's happy to reproduce them. If a human was doing that, it would be a clear copyright violation. If it was a non-AI computer doing it, it would be too.
